Lang ASL, GE Healthcare, Milwuakee, WI, United States, Radiology, Brigham and Women's Hospital, Boston, MA, United States Introduction: Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is an excellent modality for non-invasive evaluation of cartilage lesions in knees. T2-weighted contrast with low to intermediate cartilage signal and high fluid signal is one of the primary methods to establish contrast in cartilage. Although several types of pulse sequences have been proposed for evaluating cartilage (1,2), the optimum sequence(s) has yet to be determined. The purpose of this study is to generate diagnostic-quality T2-weighted images with high spatial resolution at 3.0 Tesla, all within 10 minutes. We propose the use of the refocused SSFP echo to generate T2-weighted images for better delineation of cartilage and fluid in muscular-skeletal joints.

Comparison of Three-Dimensional Double-Echo Steady-State Sequence with Routine Two-Dimensional Sequence in the Depiction of Knee Cartilage
Introduction: There are some routine two-dimensional sequences, including short tau inversion recovery (STIR), T2-weighted fast-spin echo (T2W-FSE), and proton-density fast spin-echo for diagnosing osteoarthritis and lesions of the knee cartilage. However, these sequences have some disadvantages, such as long scan time, inadequate spatial resolution, and suboptimal tis...

Diffusion-weighted imaging (DWI) has strong potential as a diagnostic for early cartilage damage, with clinical impact for diseases such as osteoarthritis. However, in vivo DWI of cartilage has proven difficult with conventional methods due to the short T2. This work presents a 3D steady-state DWI sequence that is able to image short-T2 species with high SNR. When combined with 2D navigator cor...
متن کاملMagnetic Resonance Imaging Based Evaluation of Articular Cartilage Degeneration
Introduction: In-vivo magnetic resonance imaging(MRI) can potentially be used to determine structural changes in articular cartilage of the knee. Water, the dominant component in articular cartilage, is present in both free(70%) and bound form. Bound water is present in collagen fibrils comprising 1020% of the cartilage. Studies indicate that T2 – the proton spin-spin relaxation time parameter ...
متن کاملI-45: Advance MRI Sequences in Pelvic Endometriosis
Background: To assess MRI in diagnosing endometriotic lesions, emphasizing T2*weighted imaging efficacy. Materials and Methods: This prospective study of 48 females (22-38 years, average 29.6) clinically suspected of endometriosis from September 2009 to April 2012. MRI was performed with a 1.5 T imager (Siemens) with a body array coil. T1, T2 and T2* weighted (2D-FLASH) sequences were obtained ...
متن کاملAre 3D FSE MRI sequences of the knee at 1.5 T effective in the detection of meniscal and ligament tears? How useful are they?
Radiol Bras. 2016 Mar/Abr;49(2):V–VI The use of fast spin-echo (FSE) magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) sequences is the most versatile way of evaluating the musculoskeletal system. Anisotropic, two-dimensional (2D) sequences have greater resolution in the acquisition plane whereas the voxel resolution in isotropic three-dimensional (3D) volumetric sequences is the same in all planes with no loss...
